How should we share with others the hope that we have in Christ Jesus and our Christian faith? In today’s society and culture, it can be a difficult process trying to explain to someone who and what you believe, and even how and why you practice your religious faith. In our world with the ability to manipulate everything with technology, we have to be vigilant in knowing and expressing the truth. Misinformation is very prevelant in every area of our lives. Therefore, it is imperative that we learn and hold on to the truth.
That’s the main reason Jude wrote to the churches to warn them of the dangers of false teaching, and to protect themselves. Jude’s powerful letter opens with a passionate plea: “Contend for the Faith”. The word contend paints a picture of struggle, perseverance and determination. He is asking believers to actively guard, protect and live out their faith in the midst of challenges. In Jude’s day, words from false teachers crept into the church, distorting the truth of the gospel and leading people astray. Today, we face similar threats: pressure from culture, diluted versions of truth, and the temptation to compromise for comfort.
Contend for the Faith means:
- KNOW THE TRUTH: The Word of God –we cannot defend what we do not understand. We are called to be rooted in scripture, seeking wisdom and guidance from God’s word. Deep roots prevent uprooting!
- LIVE THE TRUTH: Live the Word –our lives should reflect the faith we profess. Contending is not only arguing for doctrine but also demonstrating love, integrity, and holiness in our daily walk. Life style authenticates our faith.
- STAND FIRM IN THE TRUTH: Speak the Word –proclaim the truth with grace, even when opposed, misunderstood, or pressured, we remain steadfast like a disciplined athlete reaching for the winning prize. We persevere for the crown of life God has promised us. Contending for the Faith doesn’t mean debating, being argumentative or harsh. Rather, it is a call to defend the truth with humility, boldness, unwavering commitment by living faithfully so that the world sees Christ in you, all the while pointing others to him.
Jude reminds us we are stewards of the faith handed down to us. So, we must stand firm, live boldly and defend truth lovingly. Be committed to win souls for Christ. Contending for the Faith is not in our strength alone, but through God who empowers us to stand. This closing benediction expresses all that God will do for us in this situation. Now to Him who is able to keep you from falling prey to any falsehoods of society; He will present you without a single fault. All glory to Him who is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all times now and forevermore. Amen.
