WEDNESDAY IN THE WORD DEVOTIONAL – JUNE 3, 2026
“GOD’S GLORY AND SPLENDOR”
Psalm 8 (NRSV)
“O LORD, OUR SOVEREIGN, HOW MAGESTIC IS YOUR NAME IN ALL THE EARTH!”
At the heart of Psalm 8 is an enduring question: “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?” (v.4) Specifically, who are we in the grand scheme of God’s vast and magnificent creation? What value, significance, purpose, or merit do we have, such that God chooses to be “mindful” of us that God bothers to care for us? Psalm 8 reminds us that we each hold an honored place in God’s eyes. We are invited into his grandeur of creation to consider the mystery of divine attention and care. It is both humbling and empowering to recognize that, despite our limitations, God chooses us to serve in his ongoing work. Our purposeful mission is to be obedient faithfulness.
As we mature in our faith journey, we better appreciate the beauty, the honesty, and wisdom of his Word stored in our memory. For me, the ancient wisdom in the words now have greater meaning in the Psalmist’s question while gazing at the night sky (v.3). Maybe you find yourself humbled by a star-studded sky, the expanse of the ocean, a mountain range that seems to touch the clouds, or the enormous diversity of the animal kingdom. The Psalmist loses his sense of scope and scale in relation to the celestial wonders above his head. Even without the benefits of modern science, he recognizes that the vastness he’s observing requires a redirection. His own measurements are useless; he needs God to show him who and what he really is. Then God shows us who we are in his divine plan; we are called to be caretakers and stewards of all that God has made. Under God’s loving and attentive gaze, our place in creation has become profoundly meaningful. As we begin and end our days with praise, it is God who is sovereign, God who is majestic, God whose name is imprinted throughout creation. And God deems it good. And we are placed into God’s good order. We are given a divine collaboration with each other as beloved creations of God. As we recognize our place within God’s creation, we rise to experience a sense of profound responsibility. We honor this trust by caring for one another and for the earth, seeking wisdom, compassion, and justice. In this way, our lives become a reflection of God’s love and purpose, joining the chorus of cretion in praise and gratitude.
Divine collaboration is that God chooses to work in partnership with us to accomplish his purpose. God invites us to be active “co-workers” in advancing his kingdom, plans, and will. It refers to the supreme greatness, awe-inspiring power, and absolute sovereignty of God. It highlights a combination of limitless authority, holiness, and transcendent beauty that demands deep respect, wonder, and reverence from humankind. So much depends on how we respond. So, in the process, we live out of the fullness of our insignificance, our achievements, our dependence, and our divine vocation, so that God’s name will be honored through our fleeting days. With this realization we must reflect deeply on our responsibilities within creation. We are not merely passive observers, but active participants entrusted with nurturing and preserving the world around us. Each act of kindness, stewardship, and respect for all living things echoes the Psalmist’s awe, reminding us that our daily choices matter in the tapestry of God’s handiwork.
