At the heart of Psalm 8 is an enduring question: “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?” (v.4) Specifically, who are we in the grand scheme of God’s vast and magnificent creation? What value, significance, purpose, or merit do we have, such that God chooses to be “mindful” of us that God bothers to care for us? Psalm 8 reminds us that we each hold an honored place in God’s eyes. We are invited into his grandeur of creation to consider the mystery of divine attention and care. It is both humbling and empowering to recognize that, despite our limitations, God chooses us to serve in his ongoing work. Our purposeful mission is to be obedient faithfulness.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

In a world that often celebrates status, power, and recognition, this passage flips the world’s definition of greatness on its head by teaching that true influence comes from humble service rather that exerting authority over others. The many voices swirling around in our world today oftentimes determine the voices in our heads and hearts. But, if we indeed listen to these voices oif wordly wisdom, we will suffer a lot of fear, anxiety, and un-necessary distress. Exactly like the disciples in the boat on the Sea of Galilee when a sudden storm arose, they became overwhelmed by fear and panic.
