Real faith is more than the words we speak or beliefs we hold, it’s a life we live. James challenges us to examine the authenticity of our faith by its evidence. He’s not saying that we’re saved by works, but that True and Saving faith will always produce actions. It’s not enough to simply say, “I will believe in God.” Even the demons believe and tremble in terror according to verse 19. But they don’t trust, love or obey Him.
When someone claims to have faith, that person may have give only intellectual asset or agreement, with a set of Christian teachings. This is incomplete faith. True faith transforms our conduct as well as our thoughts. If the way we treat others remains unchanged, we haven’t truly digested the truths we claim to believe.
Real Faith:
^ Shows Compassion: (James 2:15-16). If we see someone in need and turn away, our faith is in question
^ Acts in Obedience: (Hebrews 11). The great heros and sheroes of faith, Abraham, Moses, Rahab, were not praised for belief alone, but for what their belief moved them to do.
^ Bears Fruit: (John 15:5). Jesus said that those who remain in Him will bear much fruit. A fruitless life is a faithless life.
Looking deeper into true faith, we have to look at verse 17 and Paul’s writing to the Romans. At first glance, these verses seem to contradict what Paul said in Romans 3:28; “We are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.” The teachings of James and Paul are not at odds. While it is true that our good deeds can not earn our salvation, true faith results in changed lives and good deeds. Loving service does not substitute for faith in Christ. Real faith lives. It walks the talk, it forgives, it gives, it prays, it serves and most of all it endures.Faith is not passive; it propels us into God’s will.
Today let’s ask ourselves: Is my Faith alive? Can others see Jesus in what I do, not just what I say? Then pray for deliverance from hollow or hidden faith, asking God to stir in you a living faith that moves, gives, and grows. Trust Him to teach you to walk by faith, not just talk about it only. To God be all the glory for the faithful things he has done and is going to do in you. Amen
