“WEDNESDAY IN THE WORD DEVOTIONAL”
May 27, 2026
“GOD HOLDS THE FUTURE”
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
The people receiving this promise were living in exile. They were disappointed, displaced, and discouraged. Yet God spoke hope into their waiting. If you were to ask anyone in the age range from the 20’s and well into the 80’s and everyone in between, what are your greatest fears? The litany of themes would include: career uncertainty, financial pressures, health issues and relationship stress–just to name a few. Yes, we can all relate to some or all of these concerns; however, I believe that our greatest fears should begin with loosing sight of God and his plans.
People are often asked the question: where do you see yourself in 5, 20 or 15 years? We spend years trying to achieve something that God had never desired for us to do or even become. That’s when we become so distracted by trying to succeed that we forget God. Understanding our key verse in Jeremiah 29:11 should teach us that God’s promises are not dependent on perfect circumstances. Even when life feels delayed, abruptly disconnected, and difficult, God is still working behind the scenes. It is all dependent upon a willing and obedient heart and mind that will follow his lead.
Sometimes we become anxious because we cannot see the full picture. God sees the beginning and the end. What feels like confusion to us is often preparation in his hands. Delays are not denials, and closed doors may simply be divine redirection. This verse does not promise a life without challenges; it promises God’s presence and purpose through every challenge. His plans are greater than temporary pain, disappointment, or even failure. When we surrender our own timelines and trust his wisdom, we will discover peace in knowing that our future is secure in God.
Abraham was asked by God to leave all that was familiar as well as family stability and security behind. When he did not know where he was going–but he did know because Abraham’s faith in God was greater than his faith in himself. He put his faith in action by obeying God’s call. The problem with our society is that we are so far from God, therefore we can’t hear his call in order to obey it. Today, while we still can call on God, let’s choose to trust him even when the path is unclear. Keep praying, keep believing and keep walking faithfully with him. Remember that the God who promised hope and a future is still writing your story. He will give you peace in uncertain seasons and strength to trust him when we cannot see what he is doing. Keep following him faithfully and know that your future is safe in God’s hands. Amen.
