Trinity Baptist Church of San Mateo, California had its humble beginning in the hearts of a group of 53 Christians who gathered for prayer, direction, and assessment on Sunday morning, January 5, 1975, at 10:00 A.M. The Holy Spirit inspired this faithful gathering to establish a unique, lively, and vital fellowship. The late Mr. and Mrs. John D. Smith hosted the first two meetings of this fellowship in their home in Foster City, CA.
Subsequent meetings were held at the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Howard in San Mateo, CA where the church was formally organized on Sunday, February 5, 1975. To facilitate the growing fellowship, Church School activities, and other functions, the fellowship moved to the Carlmont YMCA building in San Carlos, CA. At Carlmont, the fellowship labored, sacrificed and grew in membership and commitment as it endeavored to purchase the present church campus, located at 39 E. 39th Avenue in San Mateo, CA.
Our first service was on Sunday, January 7, 1979, the congregation marched into the present sanctuary for worship service.
The congregation adopted several resolutions on Sunday, January 26, 1975, that shaped the following events—recognition and acceptance of John D. Smith, James L. Lillard, Joe L. Allen, Eligah Johnson, and Charles Phillips as deacons; the extension of an official call to the founding pastor, Rev. Dr. Arthur LeRoy Jarrett, as leader of the congregation.
On Wednesday, January 28, 1975, marked the first Prayer and Bible study meeting in the home of the late Mittie East in Redwood City, CA. Sunday, April 23, 1975 the Women's Fellowship was organized in the home of the late Robbie Baker in San Mateo, CA. The Women's Fellowship formed four vibrant circles--the Mittie-Mary Circle, Marshall—Baker Circle, Business and Professional Women's Circle, and the Johnnie Mae Howard Circle. The Youth Fellowship was organized and played a very active role in congregational life. The Men's Fellowship, Senior and Junior Ushers, and Deaconess Board, also emerged by aid of the Holy Spirit. There were also other ministries formed to meet the needs for fellowship, Christian education, and worship, namely—Home Bible Study Groups, Family Life Encounter Groups, Prayer Band, Evening Church Bible Study, as well as Sunday Worship and Church School, held 9:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M., respectfully.
With an entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to human development, on October 1, 1979, Trinity started an on-site Child Care Center, which managed for 15 years. Lubertha Johnson directed the Center under the administrative oversight of the Child Care Board of Directors and Child Care Evangelist Ministry. The Center offered a daily program and ministry for many children and families, ages 2 to 5.
As Trinity grew, several members experienced God's call to ordained ministry – Andrea Howard Washington, Keith L. Washington, Al Romes, and Leotta E. Jarrett, the pastor's wife. Subsequently, Trinity ordained Rev. Washington and Dr. Leotta Jarrett as clergy. The year 2000 is marked by two tremendous milestones – first the installation of a steeple, donated by the late Mrs. Eleanor Threadgill, and second, the dedication of a cornerstone, bearing the name of the founding deacons and pastor. Behind the cornerstone les a treasured time capsule to be opened in 2100, 100 years after the cornerstone's dedication, as a gift to the generations to come.
The Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Jarrett retired on December 31, 2003, after 29 years of dedicated service and was honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus.
In April 2004, Rev. Dr. Caroll Broadfoot, Jr. accepted the church's call to become the Pastor during the Interim, while guiding us in our church self-study as the church searched for a new pastor.
