When we stop long enough to take an inventory of our life’s circumstances, it can be a bit overwhelming. Everything in our news and on our technological platforms keep us wound up like a tight spring. And when it comes to the challenges we will inevitably face, we have to pick and choose our battles. Remembering the Lord allows the rain to fall on the Just as well as the Unjust. Therefore, it is imperative that before we get in the heat of our battles, we know who is able to bring about success in all things.
In the battle everything feels insurmountable. That thorn in your side has not gone away. You are growing weary, feeling worn out and even your faith seems to be on the brink of surrender. Hold on, the dark clouds give way to rays of light. Nothing about your circumstances has changed, but your heart knows that you don’t have to struggle through life or any ballte on your own. Why? Because you serve a God who sees and understands. He has promised to never leave or forsake you. So, the message of 2 Chronicles 20:15 is for us today as well. Just like King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah and Jerusalem were facing a daunting challenge. They were up against a number of vast armies coming to attack them. Fear and uncertainty gripped them. In the midst of their crisis, God spoke through his prophet with a powerful message of assurance and encouragement. This is what the LORD says: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.”
Sometimes the pain of this world, or our own personal suffering can push us in a corner, filling us with a fear we never thought possible. It can feel like the enemy of our souls is charging towards us and there’s no stopping (verse 6). But God sits high and looks low. He’s standing ready with power and might in his hands making a way. Like King Jehoshaphat who called all the people to stand wiith him in the temple of the Lord and inquire of God (verse 4); he prefaced his prayer to God by stating that the nation was helpless and did not know what to do. He ended it with the key to their victory when he said, “but our eyes are on you.”
Just like this king, our situations may be so dire that we come to the absolute end of ourselves, unable to see a way through. But know that our saving grace is in our God, who hears our cries and is mighty to save. He promises to fight for us when our hearts turn to him and seek his voice. So, pour out your helplessness to him and let him move against your enemies, those who cause you hurt, confusion and fear. Whatever you are struggling with today, lay it before the LORD. Have faith in him. Give thanks and keep a posture of humility and gratitude, even before you see any changes. He is faithful and his deliverance will come. Remember the battle is not yours, it’s the LORD’S! Amen.
