“THE POWER AT WORK”

Luke 10:21-24 NRSV

“Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”

Jesus thanks God the Father for the work He has done in the lives of the disciples. “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden those things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seems good in your sight.” God cares for the insignificant.

How does this impact the issues before us today? This question is a pondering thought, and I realize I have reached a point of being “sick and tired” of the continuous Breaking News of the day. Still, it is important to remain alert in differentiating what is factually true and what is false. Where it’s not easy to ignore current events, our faith shapes the way we respond to the issues we likely care about the most.

Know this — God so loved us so much that he sent Jesus to redeem us from our sin, revealing his truth in an uncertain world. And because of this, our world and our lives are not the same since we abide in Jesus, and he abides in us. Through the Power at work in us we see the world through the lens of Jesus Christ that adds to how we see the ethical and political issues we face.

The Power at Work is Grace. It is a gift we cannot earn. God does for us that we cannot do for ourselves, for grace is God’s action springing from overflowing love. Our characteristic in living out God’s love for us is not because of somebody’s temperament, their politics, their smell, their wealth, their fame, their status, their gender, their skin color, or their family background. Jesus reveals greater meaning as you live in his expectation. “You shall love the Lord God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). We do not love others for our own gain, but for each other’s growing opportunities in this changing world according to God’s purpose.

God’s purpose is loving, nothing is wasted, everything will be made right when Jesus returns. In the meantime, we hold onto the truth that Jesus loves us regardless of dysfunctional messes. God is the fountain of love that flows through us into every life we touch. He never loves us less, no matter how much of a twisted genealogical line woven or the past brought to shame. Although the consequences remain painful; Christ’s love remains pure. He forgives, never loving less. When those who are crushed under the weight of guilt, brokenness caused in one’s life or in others. The love of God in Jesus at the cross longs to forgive them and heal every broken thing. To the person alone and rejected because of their earthly identity, comes the Good News that all powers of this world are subject to Jesus who is Lord, that the only identify that counrs in the end is having Jesus say to you, “I know you.” Amen.
