LOVE is patient, love is kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wrong. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 NLT

It’s been said that Mother’s Day is the third most celebrated holiday in the world behind Christmas and Easter. Given that reality, in what ways are you recognizing those whom God called into the role of mothering?

What is the appropriate time to honor mothering? Is it in the best of times, in the difficult circumstances, in the expected or unexpected occurrence? Any of these are reasons to express gratitude all the time. God is the source of all mothering with peace, joy, love comfort, wisdom, and truth. For God is our Creator. The Holy Spirit guides, corrects, and enables us to do the same, sharing that source of mothering. Christ Jesus is our Redeemer. God is our perfect mothering source—all power and always with us.

God is not so far away from us that we cannot feel God’s presence. God smooths the rough edges in our lives. Even when some circumstances we encounter are not so welcomed, it’s still possible to feel God’s comfort. In such times we pray and thrive grateful to know God is with us. God is in the creation, before recording time, in the now that we know, and in the forthcoming future we have not yet seen. This we know…God provides for our needs. God guides, corrects, and educates us in love as members of a great family.

When our earthly mother is no longer with us; we miss her and commonly yearn to do the things we enjoyed doing together. Regardless how many months or years pass by, we still cling to her presence in our thoughts. We rely on Jesus who knows our deepest need, listens to our prayers and we are comforted with blessings of those cherished mothering moments.

Recalling who significantly made an impact in my life…who might yours be? How were they significant?  Then give thanks to God for offering the gift of mothering, to those whom God calls to nurture us, regardless of the circumstances. Remember them in prayer: God of Mercy, we praise and honor you with loving gratitude for your blessings, your motherly love, both gentle and fierce, both strong and humble, both kind and true. Lord, thank you for sending us all who served as mothers and those who remain serving in this time. May we put our trust and hope in you always. May we lean more on you as we grow closer in relationship with you and each other and may we never give up. Amen.
