“TRUSTING GOD IN THE WAITING”

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.” Psalm 37:7 NLT

Lent is a season of waiting, reflection, restoration and trust. As we remember Jesus’ journey to the cross, we are reminded that God’s timing is often different from ours. Psalm 37 calls us to Trust in the Lord and not to be consumed by worry when we see injustice, or feel like life isn’t happening as we had hoped. Therefore, it seems that we have forgotten our history and it’s repeating itself again. There is nothing new under the sun.

As people and especially Christians, we need to be reminded over and over again, to stop worrying about people who do bad things. A while back there was a slogan that said, “Keep Calm and Carry on.” In this psalm, David is saying the same thing; keep calm, trust God and carry on with your life as a faithful follower, and let God take care of people who do bad things.

David encourages us to:

  • Trust in the Lord and do good (v.3). Living obedience even when you don’t see immediate results.
  • Delight in the Lord (v.4). Find joy in Him rather than in circumstances.
  • Commit your ways to the Lord (v.5). Surrender your plans and desires to His will.
  • Be Still and wait patiently (v.7). Resist anxiety and trust in God’s perfect timing.

These verses challenges us to surrender our impatience and worries, believing that God is at work behind the scenes. Jesus modeled this during his 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). He didn’t take short cuts or give in to the enemy’s temptations, but He trusted fully in the Father’s plan.

Lent is a season of waiting and refocusing on God’s ways. Learn to pause and meditate on the scriptures you have read. David also reminds us that our words and deeds make a difference. So, set aside worry, refrain from negative and destructive emotions such as anger, envy, and jealousy. Be satisfied with what you have, and where you are because God knows the why. Trust that God will provide you with eternal security, even if you feel threatened by all the evil around you. Continue to care for the weak and helpless and give to those in need because when you do it helps everyone. Basically, “Keep Calm and Carry On,” speaking words of Justice and Truth in Love, seeking and following the righteousness of God.

Heavenly Father, in this season of Lent, teach us to wait on You and trust. Help us not to be anxious or discouraged when things seem slow and unfair. Remind us that You are faithful and your timing is perfect. Help us to commit our ways to You. In Jesus’ name.

Amen.
