Encounter, Clearing, Journey, and Wholeness

We do not merely aim to encounter God; we aim to experience the life that results from encountering God, and to clear paths for others to journey there too. At the core, this is function of church—encounter, clearing, journey, and wholeness. What makes you and I even bother with God-stuff is the Holy Spirit, the One who invites us, disturbs us, ignites the flame of hope in us; the One who tells us that we could live deep, meaningful lives with passion. What difference does the encounter of the Holy Spirit mean to a 15-year-old that thinks suicide is the best escape from cyber-bullies? What does the encounter of the Holy Spirit mean for the recovery of the value of aging and the unique gifts of the elderly? Does the Holy Spirit have anything to do with the soaring cost of higher education and the decrease in financial aid? How can the encounter of the Holy Spirit create a safe space for men who cry and shout in stadiums to bring their whole selves to church? How can the Holy Spirit empower our marriages to thrive, the hungry around us to get fed (in both good economies and bad), and ex-offenders to reenter communities that they once harmed, as agents of reparation and life redeemed?

As a community of faith, these are the questions that we are called to face with innovation, hope, and alternatives in the San Mateo Peninsula and beyond. And as you move from encountering God and begin to see God's love for yourself, you will be compelled to continue on your journey toward wholeness, being changed as you invite others to be changed—all witnessing the Spirit!
