“LIVING WITHIN GOD’S GRACE”

1 JOHN 3:1-10 NRSV

Beloved, we are God’s children now;

what we will be has not yet been revealed.

What we do know is this: when God is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see God as he is.” 1 John 3:2

No one is ever outside of God’s grace. Yet, there are times when we may not be fully aware of this incredible gift. It is only through God’s grace that our hearts are awakened to its presence, and in our acceptance of this gift, we can respond with sincerity: “Good morning, I am your God.” In this moment, the voice is our own, affirming our belonging to God. What a blessing it is to be a child of God and to know it! This sacred worthiness is truly grace upon grace. It cannot be bought, earned, or won through our own efforts. Instead, this worthiness is freely offered to us by the God of Mercy. This is the essence of our identity as children of God.

Even before we had any knowledge of God, before we could even imagine that God existed or that we might need God, grace was extended to us. God acted first, sending Jesus for our redemption–not because of our awareness or desire, but purely out of divine love. This act of grace was given freely, independent of anything we could do or ask for, and it is this gift that defines who we are as God’s children.

It’s easy to get bogged down in negativity. I’m sure the 24-hour news cycle doesn’t help, with its torrent of catastrophes, crimes, power greed, shut down and all the attendant partisan outrage. While I do think it’s important to stay informed on many of these things, I wonder where we can turn for stories of hope that brings inner joy. Hope is in the new life and resolute faithfulness of God’s love. “Good morning, child of God.” How would you react hearing this? Though not an audible voice, yet clear and direct. What an affirming message–to be called child of God!

When we pause to reflect on this identity, it can transform our outlook, lifting us above the constant stream of negativity and uncertainty that surrounds us. There are a deep comfort and strength in knowing we belong to God, held securely by a love that never fades or fails. In moments of doubt or discouragement, remembering our place in God’s family, being renewed in spirit gives us hope to face each day.

This means that each one of us is [art of God’s intentional plan, created and includedfor a specific purpose. Our relationship with God is not accidental or random; it is deliberate and meaningful, rooted in grace that precedes our own understanding or efforts. Our belonging does not depend on merit, accomplishments, or worthiness; instead, it is a sign of God’s grace, affirming that we are cherished and accepted just as we are. Through the Spirit of God in Christ, transformation is not merely an external change, but a deep renewal of our hearts and minds. As the Spirit of God works within us, we begin to see ourselves and the world with new eyes, guided by love, compassion and hope.This transformation empowers us to live as true children of God, reflecting Christ’s character in our thoughts, words, and actions. We are shaped by the Spirit of God to grow in faith, courage, and kindness, moving beyond old patterns of fear or self-doubt. Each day, the Spirit invites us to embrace our identity as beloved, enabling us to respond to life’s challenges with grace and perseverance. In this way, the Spirit in Christ continually renews us, drawing us closer to God and to one another in the bonds of holy love. As ambassadors of Christ, we embrace this wonderful truth living within God’s divine plan. This is central in our active life, joining in humble adoration, rejoicing, and singing loudly in celebration–declaring Amazing Grace. Amen!
