“GOD’S UNMERITED GIFT OF GRACE
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God–not the result of works, so no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 NRSV
Our society has changed so drastically in the past few years. The things that were a common courtesy, such as respect, kindness, and graciousness to name a few, have gone out of style. We have forgotten the true meaning of “Grace” and as Christians we are called to demonstrate what it looks like.
Grace is one of the most powerful and comforting truths of the Christian faith. Simply put, grace is God’s unearned favor freely given to us. It is not something we achieve through good behavior, religious performance, or moral perfection. Out of gratitude for this free gift, our hearts should overflow with a desire to help and serve others with kindness, love, and gentleness. Grace meets us exactly where we are and lovingly draws us toward who God is calling us to be.
The apostle Paul reminds us that salvation itself is rooted in grace. We are not saved because we were good enough, but because God is gracious enough. Grace shifts our focus away from striving and into trusting. It teaches us to rest in what Christ has already accomplished on the cross.
Grace sustains us daily. When we stumble, grace restores us. When we feel weak, grace strengthens us. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “But he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” This means that even our shortcomings can become places where God’s grace shines most brightly. Grace does not excuse sin, but it empowers transformation. It invites repentance, offers foregiveness, and leads us into renwed life.
Finally, grace teaches us how to live with others. As recipients of grace, we are called to extend grace, to forgive, to show mercy, and to love as Christ loved us. Romans 5:8 reminds us of this; “But God proved his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” You see grace is not a doctrine to believe, it is a way of life to receive and to share with everyone. We need to stop striving and start trusting in God’s grace today, by asking him to shape our hearts, renew our minds, and guide our steps by his grace. Amen.
