“LENT IS THE SEASON OF SURRENDER”

“THEN JESUS SAID TO HIS DISCIPLES, “WHOEVER WANTS TO BE MY DISCIPLE MUST DENY THEMSELVES AND TAKE UP THEIR CROSS AND FOLLOW ME.” Matthew 16:24 NIV

Lent is a sacred season of reflection, repentance, and renewal. It mirrors Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, where he fasted, prayed, and resisted temptation. This journey was not just about suffering, it was about surrendering.

Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him. This does not mean mere self-denial for its own sake, but surrendering our will to God’s will. It’s about letting go of anything that distracts us from Him. Our pride, fear, sin, a habit or even comfort. Trusting that His way leads to a better way of living.

One of the common activities that people engage in during this season, most often is Fasting. However, Fasting during Lent is more than simply giving up food or certain comforts; it is about drawing closer to God. When Jesus spoke about fasting, He emphasized that it should be done with a heart focused on God, not the approval of others. True fasting is not just an outward act, but an inward transformation. Matthew 6:17-18 tells us, “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your heavenly Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (NIV)

When we fast, we create space for God to work in us. As we deny ourselves, we become more aware of our dependence on Him. Our hunger should remind us that “man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4). Fasting shifts our focus from the physical to the spiritual, teaching us to hunger for righteousness and seek God’s presence with greater intensity.

So, during this Lenten season, consider what God may be calling you to surrender. Is it a habit, a fear, a grudge, or an area of control? Whatever it may be, as you release these things to Him, invite the Holy Spirit to fill those empty spaces with faith, peace, and purpose. Ask the Lord to help you to focus not on what you are giving up, but what you are gaining — more of Him. Ask Him to teach you to quiet your soul, listen for his voice, seek Him with all your heart, and strengthen you to replace your worldly desires with Spiritual Renewal. He has promised to answer our prayers, especially when we ask with a godly motive and in Jesus’ name. To God be All the Glory! Amen.
