Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Allowing God to be your guide begins with a commitment to trust. God cannot lead you where you will not follow. Begin with the assertion that God knows you, me, everything and everybody, good, exceptional and unexceptional.
After a long day spent preaching, Jesus is curled up at the stern of a boat, sleeping soundly as his disciples steer the vessel. Mark 4:37-38 interrupts the peace. All at once the winds pick up, huge waves lash the boat, and the disciples, though seasoned fishermen fear for their lives. In desperation, they awaken the still-sleeping Jesus: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” It’s not a question; it’s an accusation. Their lack of faith reminds us that even those who lived and walked with Jesus saw his miracles, and heard his message still found it difficult to be 100 percent faith-filled all the time. Lest we forget their lack of faith was rebuked—and by extension, so is ours.
The Lord never promised we will never see a storm in life as a matter of fact, he told us to expect trouble in this world (John 16:33)). Then why in the midst of trouble, turmoil some people express hate, blame and shame? And yet others bring compassion rather than hate, demonstrate relief and support. Is love easier to hide than fear? The Lord sees through our fears, hears our questions, hears our hurt, and hones into our need. Lest we forget, if Jesus was able to rescue the apostles from the storm, Jesus is also able to rescue us from the sting of fire, grief and loss. When we love our neighbor as ourselves, we do justice, express compassion, care for the afflicted and stand up for the oppressed. God offers you a way for true healing and resolve.
As you marvel at the powerful display of Jesus’ supernatural ability over the elements, the circumstances beyond your understanding, Jesus brings immense comfort to you. Faith in Christ is never misplaced. Remember–Trust in the Lord always. Seek truth in the Word of God. God is bigger than any of our circumstances. Personal prayer with God allows hope and love to prevail. Turn to God for strength to do what is required. Prayer is not a duty set before us, and it is not just a personal choice, but the willingness to believe, to have faith that it is Christ who holds the keys to life and death. Serve God and serve each other. Lest you forget Jesus promised he would be with you through the storm and through your weaknesses. Be filled with his great awe. If he can calm the storms of the sea with one word, he can calm your worries of life as well. Trust in the Lord! Peace Be Still! Amen!
